Knowing where to get details of your rights as a landlord or tenant
In Ireland, there are two organisations working for the rights of both tenants and landlords (yes, landlords have rights too!)
These are Threshold and the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB).
Threshold, is an organisation which has been around a few decades “whose aim is to secure a right to housing, particularly for households experiencing the problems of poverty and exclusion”.
Threshold has a great section on your rights and rather than trying to re-invent the wheel and rewriting everything they advise we’ve decided to link directly to its advice section:
- Tenant’s Rights
- Landlords Rights
- Signing a Lease
- More About Leases
- Rent Books
- Getting Back Your Deposit
- Fire Safety
- Avoid Being Conned
- Ending Your Tenancy
The PRTB was established in 2004 to “resolve disputes between landlords and tenants; operate a national tenancy registration system and provide information and policy advice on the private rented sector.” If you’ve a dispute with a landlord or tenant, the PRTB is the organisation to contact – its dispute resolution service has replaced the court route in regard to many landlord and tenant disputes.
If you’re a landlord renting out a house to private tenants and you haven’t registered with the PRTB, it’s time to get your skates on and register with these guys or face fines.
If you need a dispute settled you need to start with filling out these forms.
The PRTB also has downloadable PDF guides for landlords and tenants on its site in a range of languages: English, Irish, Portugese, French, Russian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Chinese, Spanish, Polish and Slovakian. Definitely worth downloading, printing off and sticking in your inside pocket if you’re off to let an apartment or house anywhere in Ireland.
